Dr Alvin Tan

Alvin is a consultant Medical Oncologist who treats a variety of cancer types with a focus on the treatment of genitourinary, gastrointestinal, brain and skin cancers. He works at SalutisCare and Waikato Hospital. He is the current Head of Department of Medical Oncology at Waikato Hospital.

Alvin completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (2006) at the University of Otago, Dunedin. He achieved his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2014, having trained in Medical Oncology at Auckland City Hospital where he developed special interest in the treatment of genitourinary cancers and participation in oncology clinical trials.

Alvin is the primary site investigator for several collaborative oncology trials being conducted at Waikato Hospital and has previously participated in the 2016 Australia & Asia Pacific Clinical Oncology Research Development (ACORD) Workshop. He is a graduate of the 2019 European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Leaders Generation Programme Asia and currrently serves in the ESMO Practising Oncologist Working Group Committee (2021-present). He is a past Executive Committee member of the New Zealand Society of Oncology (NZSO) and was the NZSO Annual Scientific Meeting Convenor in 2021.

He has been the previous Chair of the Aotearoa NZ Advanced Training Sub-committee for Medical Oncology (2023-2024) with a focus on supporting trainee Medical Oncologists in New Zealand. His dedication and passion for teaching has seen him in the roles of FRACP supervisor since 2015, as well as past Director of Training, Medical Oncology department at Waikato Hospital.

Alvin is married to an understanding wife, who is very accommodating of his work commitments. They have three children, and in his spare time, he enjoys family outings and playing social basketball.
